America’s Worst Charities
So I’ve been interested in some non-profit organizations, mostly because I got to the point in my life where I would like to create my own foundation, because there are so many things I would like to do to help people in need, mostly in South America, where I feel I would have the biggest impact. Although, to start going through that path, I think it requires a lot of planning, a LOT, probably years. And I say years, because to prepare a very solid strategic plan, is necessary a 24/7 investment, which I think I won’t be able to afford it, due to the fact that I’ll be someone elses’ slave for a certain period of time. Praying for that stage to be very educational, and with tons of opportunities.
Coming back to the issues of charity. I was wondering about the different projects the LDS Church has in latinamerica. As we all know, the church has one of the biggest charity organization in the world, such called LDS Charities, which includes all their universities funds, and other projects, such as the Benson Institute, which happen to be called just “Benson Food Initiative”. Since my specialty is agriculture, with emphasis in irrigation, I thought that applying for a job to such organization would be a piece of cake, not only I have the expertise, but I’m also from latinamerica… duh!
Didn’t get any luck with the Benson initiative. Well… their loss because I was very excited to work for them.
So it was a little research looking for the current projects of such initiative, and guess what I found, NOTHING, ZERO, NON, VACIO. The church maintain their records secret. Even though every single NPO has to fill out a 990 Form for tax purposes, which happen to be public, the church hasn’t been releasing them since 1960s.
Anyway, I’m sort of ok with whatever the church is doing with our money, I mean, as a donor, I would like to see an annual report of things, and when looking for those annual reports, I found the video listed above. Isn’t that crazy? There are charities that only give 2% of what the receive to the actual CAUSE, and we have these CEO’s making more than 200 thousand dollars a year?
Well, if you want to learn more about it, please check this website, maybe the organization you are donating money to, is listed here.
